Orangutans & iPads

January 25, 2013

Orangutans at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo are using iPads. That explains lots of blog comment threads ….

Seriously, this is a giant evolutionary step for our caged simian cousins. App-groping apes will become just as productive as iPad-toting humans, spending hours with Facebook and Angry Birds.

Steve Jobs: Simply Divine

Steve Jobs: Simply Divine

“For Apple fans still recovering from Steve Jobs’ untimely death last year, there is some hope yet. According to Phra Thepyanmahamuni, the abbot of the Wat Phra Dhammakaya in Thailand, Jobs was reincarnated into a divinity “of middle rank – half a Witthayathorn, half yak.”

“Jobs has long been compared to a religious leader himself, and Apple has been variously described as magical and religious. In 2011 the BBC went so far as to claim that Apple products evoked religious experiences in their fans.”

iSteve

iSteve
A Steve Jobs action figure! Only $99, from InIcons. Isn’t that the coolest Steve Jobs memorial ever?

Not to the folks at Apple:

“Apple says it owns rights to Jobs’s likeness, and its letter reportedly states that it’s a criminal offense for any toy to feature Apple’s trademarks, logo, or products, as well as the appearance or name of its late co-founder.”

– “Report: Apple Goes After Latest Steve Jobs Action Figure,” Leslie Horn, PC Magazine

– “Apple ‘threatens legal action’ over Steve Jobs action doll,” Amy Willis, The Telegraph

The result of the legal threat: those InIcon action figures are fetching $135 on eBay.

In 2010, Apple stopped sales of an earlier “SJ Action Figure” that was more of an affectionate caricature. Shame, really. It was smaller, and would have looked great on the dashboard of your Prius.

Happy Birthday iPod

This Sunday the iPod personal music player turns 10 years old. Devised by Apple CEO Steve Jobs and engineers including Tony Fadell and Jon Rubinstein, the device let users download files from Apple’s iTunes site and organize their music in “playlists.” The device dominated the market, “iPod” is now a generic term for any portable MP3 player, and audio download “podcasts” are a feature of many websites.

Kids and iPads

Kids and iPads

“Letting kids use or own iPads is controversial. Parents, teachers and others aren’t so sure about letting kids get sucked into yet another electronic diversion. Pilot programs at a few schools around the country to experiment with iPad-based learning tools are often met with criticism by parents and teachers alike.

Everybody’s asking: Are iPads healthy for children?

I’m here to tell you: That’s the wrong question.

The right question is this: Is the iPad a healthy ‘replacement’ for TV? And I believe the answer is a resounding yes.”
