The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) wants America’s kids and teens to stop chugging the sugary sports drinks and caffeinated energy drinks that make youngsters edgy and obese. This should not be news, since no one benefits from sports swill. Doctors agree that the best product for hydration is water.

Sarah Palin successfully stole the thunder from the annual Rolling Thunder event honoring America’s war dead. In leathers and heels, she rode pillion on a Harley and crossed Memorial Bridge from Arlington to the National Mall.

Rolling Thunder will be heard in Washington on Sunday at Noon. The motorcycle column will leave the Pentagon Parking Lot and cross Memorial Bridge to the National Mall area.
Organizers have arranged a stage on the south side of the Reflecting Pool, near the Korean Memorial. A program of speakers and music begins as 1:30 PM, but nothing matches the sound of hundreds of bikes crossing the bridge.
Official schedule here.

Cable TV’s Top Chef tour is parked at Capitol Hill’s Eastern Market this weekend, pitting Carla Hall, Ariane Duarte, and Spike Mendelsohn against each other. The real action is in the bus (above) where six prep chefs and three runners do the real work. On Saturday, two hundred people watched this spectacle, half of them standing in the hot sun. Amazing.

Combine Memorial Day Weekend cooking and holiday bargain shopping without leaving your computer. Mark Bittman has a new Kindle Single e-book, What I Grill and Why. It’s on sale for the Memorial Day Weekend ($1.99). We recommend it.
Cooking tip: don’t put your Kindle too close to the grill or it will melt.

The Saints are marching in — in DC, that is. The annual parade of the United House of Prayer for All People will conclude at 3:00 PM today. Church brass bands and drum and bugle corps from all over the country usually march from “God’s White House” on 6th Street NW to Logan Circle, site of the home of church founder Charles Emmanuel “Sweet Daddy” Grace, and back again.
Luis Gomez posted a great photo at One Photograph a Day.

Virginia’s Arlington County may ban children under the age of eight from its dog parks.
While it is true that young children might damage valuable canines, perhaps there is room for compromise. We suggest allowing children in dog parks if they weigh under 80 pounds and are well-supervised, adequately socialized, and on leashes.

The National Pinball Museum is closing. The NPM is located in Washington’s Georgetown Park mall, and the new landlord has hit the flipper, bouncing the museum out. The institution had only been open for five months.
Is nothing sacred? The Pinball Museum is more than a repository of amusement industry technology. It is a tribute to billions of wasted hours of 20th century American youth.
