Space Shuttle Endeavour Back in the Shop

April 29, 2011

Space Shuttle Back in the Shop

To the disappointment of First Space Fan Barack Obama, NASA scrubbed the launch of the Space Shuttle Endeavour Friday afternoon. The 20-year-old spacecraft has some sort of electrical malfunction in the two heaters in auxiliary power unit 1. Or maybe it’s the carburetor.

The Endeavour was kind of jalopy to begin with, anyway. It was cobbled together out of spare parts from the 1984-model Discovery and 1985 Atlantis space shuttles.

City Birds

April 28, 2011

City Birds

“Birds breeding in city centres, or “urban adapters” … were found to have larger brains relative to their body size.

Previous studies have highlighted the link between larger brains and behavioural innovation in birds and mammals.

Scientists say this new evidence is the first to show that brain size is a key factor for animals’ survival in urban environments.”

– “Adaptable urban birds have bigger brains,” Ella Davies, BBC Earth News

Coffee in the Capital

April 26, 2011

Coffee in the Capital

M.E. Swing Coffee (founded 1916) was named best local coffee shop in Washington DC and awarded the Krups “Cup O’ Joe” prize. We’ll drink to that.

Once a fixture at 1013 E Street NW, the firm’s flagship location is now at 1702 G Street NW, near the Old Executive Office Building. More here. We recall the old store’s refusal to sell flavored beans with a hand-written sign that said “we sell no adulterated coffee.”

Dan Snyder’s Favorite Sport

April 26, 2011

Dan Snyder's Favorite Sport

Anyone familiar with professional sports in the Nation’s Capital knows that Dan Snyder, millionaire owner of that losing NFL team with the racist name, obviously cares nothing for football.  So what does he like?  Suing the bejesus out of anyone who prints anything justifiably critical of his actions, even a little local weekly with a newstand price of zero.

Mr. Snyder has announced that he is re-filing his lawsuit:

“Why I am suing Washington City Paper,” Dan Snyder, Washington Post

Easter — Earth Day Weekend

April 24, 2011

Easter -- Earth Day Weekend

Earth Day has been observed on April 22nd since 1970.

Easter, the most important feast of the Christian liturgical calendar, occurs on the first Sunday after the Pascal Full Moon and the Vernal Equinox. The Western Church uses the Gregorian Calendar to calculate the date of the Equinox and the holiday; many branches of the Eastern Church use the Julian Calendar, and general observe the Easter holiday a few weeks later. We observe sunshine in Washington today, and plan to spend the afternoon enjoying it. Hope you can, too.
