Be Inspired ... By Pork

The National Pork Board has decided to use a slogan that transcends “The Other White Meat.” The agency’s new motto for swine flesh is “Pork: Be Inspired.”

This carnivorous creative concept comes via the muses of Chicago’s Schafer Condon Carter ad agency and Chicago, as Carl Sandburg reminds us, is “Hog butcher for the world.” Like all 21st Century inspirations, this one has a website.

 Bittman Cooks on Cable TV

Mark Bittman, New York Times Minimalist” and Op-Ed columnist, will be delivered fresh to your TV starting this weekend. The première of his weekly program on the Cooking Channel airs Sunday, March 6th at 10:30 AM Eastern Time. It’s called The Minimalist.

 

Mark has two blogs, MarkBittman.com and his NYT Opinionator. He also contributes to the New York Times Magazine.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released the jobless numbers for Febuary 2011. This is a regular monthly exercise in statistical flim-flam, and the BLS knows it.

The meaningless unemployment rate in the headlines: 8.9%. The real unemployment rate: 15.9% (includes people who no longer get unemployment benefits, need work but have stopped looking because it’s futile, or have only found part-time work). Learn more here.

Students at Washington, DC’s George Washington University want controversial television star Charlie Sheen as their 2012 commencement speaker, and they’ve started a Facebook campaign to get him. This year another sexy celeb is featured at the school’s graduation: Michael Bloomberg.

The Last Doughboy

Frank Buckles died last Sunday at the age of 110. Mr. Buckles drove an Army ambulance in France in 1918 and was the last U.S. veteran of World War I.
