Mummified McDonald’s

Mummified McDonald's

New York photographer Sallie Davies put the hamburger from a McDonald’s Happy Meal® on her windowsill on April 10th and started taking pictures of it. After six months it was a little smaller and darker but it did not rot.

In the ensuing uproar, edibles archeologists discovered a 12-year-old McDonald’s hamburger and a 21-year-old burger. The implied or overt claims of the fossil fast food curators, that over-processing and drugs or preservatives halted the hamburgers’ decay, was emphatically denied by McDonald’s.

 Bush: I Ordered Waterboarding

In his memoir to be released next Tuesday, George W. Bush admits that he personally approved the use of waterboarding in the “enhanced interrogation” of prisoners while he was president. The coercive technique of intentional drowning meets the definition of torture under the Geneva Conventions, the U.N. Treaty on Human Rights, the U.S. Army Field Manual and Title 18 of the U.S. legal code.

McRib Returns

Above: What McRibs are made from.

McDonald’s has resurrected the McRib. It’s ”a ghost of fast food past,”  says Salon’s Francis Lam, an historic and “important advancement in Postmodern Simulacra Cuisine.” Japan has Kanikama (imitation crab); America has McRib.

All Asshat and No Cattle?

November 4, 2010

All Asshat and No Cattle?

Republican Congressman John Boehner got heavy use out of a Republican gag recently:

“Remember when Ronald Reagan was president? We had Bob Hope. We had Johnny Cash. Think about where we are today. We’ ve got President Obama, but we have no hope and we have no cash.”

It’s almost funny the first time, but not to the daughter of Johnny Cash, singer-songwriter Rosanne Cash. She shared her outrage with a few hundred thousand close friends via Twitter:

”John Boehner: Stop using my dad’s name as a punchline, you asshat.”

Ms. Cash later expressed regret. Not for writing that, but for posting it on Twitter.

Day of the Dead – El Día de los Muertos

November 1, 2010

Day of the Dead - El Día de los Muertos

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos) or All Souls Day is November 2st this year, a Tuesday. Here in Washington, DC the Mexican Cultural Institute (Instituto de México, 2829 16th Street, NW) has a traditional Altar de Muertos, which also commemorates the centennial of the Mexican Revolution.

The day is well-appreciated on the Web. Start with Carlos Miller and the staff of the Arizona Republic; for more detail, see Skulls to the Living, Bread to the Dead by Stanley Brandes.
