UK: ‘One in Four Lap Dancers Has a Degree’

August 31, 2010

A study has found that 25 percent of British lap dancers have a college degree.  The research by Dr Teela Sanders of the University of Leeds and Kate Hardy of Queen Mary College, University of London, is sumarized here. The BBC-TV discussion of the findings by Dr. Belinda Brooks-Gordon and a lap dance club owner (above) is more entertaining, though.

Sports Souvenirs

There’s a new sports collectible for baseball buffs — the grand jury indictment against William R. Clemens, aka Roger Clemens. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner is accused of obstruction and lying to Congress about his use of steroids and human growth hormone during his Major League career.  Mr. Clemens pleaded not guilty in federal court yesterday.

Sarah Palin, Mother of Our Nation

August 28, 2010

Sarah Palin, Mother of Our Nation

Former Alaska Temp-Governor Sarah Palin, whose five children include professional unwed teen mother Bristol and infantryman Track, faced Fox News fans at the Lincoln Memorial today and proclaimed:

“I’ve been asked to speak as the mother of a soldier, and I’m proud of that distinction. You know, say what you want to say about me but I raised a combat vet, and you can’t take that away from me.”

“No woman gives birth thinking she will hand over her child to her country, but that’s what mothers have done from ancient days.”

Mrs. Palin: Thank you for your cervix.

What Glenn Beck Means to DC

August 27, 2010

What Glenn Beck Means to DC

Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, and thousands of their gun-totin’ pals from the National Rifle Association are coming to the Nation’s Capital on Saturday to commemorate their deeply held belief in something-or-other. The date, January 28th, is the 47th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, and the rally will be in the same place it was heard, the Lincoln Memorial. Perhaps the NRA will have T-shirts honoring Dr. King and President Lincoln, both assassinated by gunshot.

But this weekend’s event means more than hijacked history, Tea Party antics,  and Glenn Beck’s self-promotion. To the people of Washington, the rally means closed streets, crowded subways, and paranoid Tea Party tourists. In short, just another weekend in Washington.

“Glenn Beck and Al Sharpton: The Rallies of 8/28,” Washington Post.

DC With Glenn Beck: Tea Party Tourism

DC With Glenn Beck: Tea Party Tourism

Glen Beck and his pals are observing the 47th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech next Saturday (August 28, 2010) by gathering at the Lincoln Memorial with the National Rifle Association. Very fitting, since President Lincoln and Rev. King were assassinated by gunshot.

Beck’s buddies are boldly standing up for something-or-other but, unlike 20 million other tourists each year, they’re scared stiff of Washington DC. Beck blogs warn them to avoid the Green and Yellow Metro lines where they might encounter rampaging hordes of junior high students and other urban horrors.
