Singer and guitarist Alex Chilton died Wednesday in New Orleans. If you don’t know the Memphis native from the band Big Star or the tribute song by The Replacements, you probably know the #1 record he recorded at age 16 with the Box Tops:

Wow, I am shocked to hear this news and can’t believe I didn’t hear about this sooner. Chilton was an excellent guitarist and one of my early inspirations when I first started playing music. The music world has lost a great friend.

Sadder than we realized:
“At least twice in the week before his fatal heart attack, Chilton experienced shortness of breath and chills while cutting grass. But he did not seek medical attention, Kersting said, in part because he had no health insurance.”
New Orleans Times-Picayune, quoted by Tim Dickerson in “Alex Chilton: Death by Uninsurance,” Rolling Stone blog.
