59-year-old industrial designer Kazuo Kawasaki, PhD., is a professor at Osaka University, head of the Progressive Inclusive Design Office of the Graduate School of Engineering. Products made from his designs are in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and include the wheelchair he designed for himself after his injury in a traffic accident.
Dr. Kawasaki has designed computer hardware, CRT and LCD monitors, nuclear power systems, and artificial organs. He has directed design projects for Apple, Canon, Eizo, Fujitsu, Matsuda, Moriseiki, NTT DoCoMo, Sony, and Toshiba.
What he is known for: designing Sarah Palin’s eyewear for Masunaga Optical Manufacturing Co. (distributed in the U.S. by Italee).
Masunaga Optical is headquartered in Japan’s Fukui Prefecture, which produces 98% of Japan’s eyeglass frames, and has a city called Obama, site of several national treasures.
