Bar Tab for Alberto?

By Mike Licht

Time to 86 Alberto from the Texas Bar

As he rides into the Texas sunset, departing Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales sure has a pack o’ troubles. Now the Department of Justice Inspector General is investigating whether Gonzales gave false or misleading Congressional testimony under oath. There are already separate investigations about partisan DOJ firings and illegal eavesdropping. He may owe some DC parking tickets, too.

The next ex-AG is headed back to the Lone Star State, and will surely look up his ol’ podnas, seeking to practice the law as she is known in Texas. It’s almost September, and most Texas attorneys are back from Padre Island and nearly sober by now.  Alberto won’t arrive for a few weeks. There’s still time to blow the dust off the creaky disciplinary mechanisms of the Texas State Bar before he arrives.

Texas attorneys: consider the disbarment of Gonzales. If not for the opprobrium he brings upon the practice of law, then do it so Inspector Generals and investigators and reporters and who knows who-all won’t be a-creepin’ around, peekin’ over your transom while you practice your noble and lucrative calling. Think about it.
